Cancer Support Group - Mad River Valley

6:00 pm

The Cancer Support Group - Mad River Valley is a partnership between CVMC and the Vermont Cancer Survivor Network. The group is designed for anyone affected by cancer. Begins with a potluck supper and a presentation on relaxation techniques by Loie Morse, CVMC Cancer Cancer volunteer (and retired professional counselor).  There will be time for people to share their cancer experiences, if desired.

Movement for Parkinson’s

Offered for people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers, this class engages participants’ minds and bodies through many styles of dance, while exploring stretching, muscle strengthening, postural stability and rhythm. The class is offered in a relaxed social environment that emphasizes enjoyment, fun and creativity, with an eye towards connecting with the community. No dance experience required.

Taught by Sara McMahon, MA, a professional movement performer and educator trained in the Dance for PD® method.

Gentle Yoga for Beginners

3:30 pm to 4:45 pm

Designed for beginners over 50 years of age, this class introduces students to a variety of yogic practices including physical postures (asana), breath work (pranayama) and meditation.

Participants should bring a yoga mat and be able to move comfortably from the floor to standing.

Instructor Monica DiGiovanni began her yoga and meditation path over 30 years ago. Her practices are based in Kripalu Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Hatha Yoga, mindfulness meditation techniques, and Buddhist practice and philosophy.

Parkinson's Pantomime Project

10:00 am to 12:00 pm

This class is for people with Parkinson's disease—and other movement disorders—and their caregivers and family. We will learn basic mime technique as a method for coping with movement limitations through visualization, articulation of gesture, and creative use of imagery and space. Circus games such as juggling and playing with balancing feathers, help foster manual dexterity, postural awareness and ease of movement in daily activities.

No theater experience required.

Beyond the Sit-Up: Core Strengthening Class

10:00 am to 11:00 am

Our core is the center of our body and strengthening this area is a requirement for stability, mobility and more efficient movement. For the first-time exerciser to the more seasoned athlete, this class will focus on increasing core strength to help prevent injuries and improve your ability to move.

Come learn a wide range of strength and conditioning movements focused on the core that go beyond the sit-up.
