Anesthesiology

Our Anesthesiology department is staffed by University of Vermont Medical Center anesthesiologists around the clock services for both scheduled procedures and emergencies.

Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery. At CVMC, we have 4 physician anesthesiologists on staff to provide around the clock services for both scheduled procedures and emergencies. Your anesthesia care team may also include a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist Assistant who is supervised by the physician anesthesiologist.

Our Services

Anesthesiologists are responsible for administering anesthesia to relieve pain and for managing vital life functions during surgery and invasive procedures such as endoscopy and biopsies. After surgery, they maintain the patient in a comfortable state during the recovery.

Anesthesiologists' responsibilities to patients include:

  • Preanesthetic evaluation and treatment;
  • Medical management of patients and their anesthetic procedures;
  • Postanesthetic evaluation and treatment;
  • On-site medical direction of any non-physician who assists in the technical aspects of anesthesia care to the patient.
