About Pain Science Therapy

Pain Science Therapy is evidence based treatment to help restore movement despite the presence of pain. This treatment strategy targets patients with chronic pain, as well as acute pain that is not responding well to traditional treatment. Understanding the science behind how our bodies feel pain can be a helpful step in the rehabilitation process. Pain is an important tool because it can help protect us and alert us to move away from things that are unsafe (fire, sharp nail). Our pain alarm in our body can become sensitive after an injury, and stay overly sensitive because the body thinks there is a threat and it wants our alarm to stay on high alert to avoid more injury. The pain felt is very real with this change in the pain alarm system, even if there is no actual threat or continued injury to our tissues.

Our therapist are trained to use strategies such as pain science education, a custom exercise program (movement is medicine!) and tools to address fears around movement and activities, to help return an overly sensitive pain system to a lower level
