Piecework: works of wool and fabric by Elisabeth Mazzilli
January 18, 2025 to March 15, 2025
Opening reception: Wednesday, January 29, 4:30pm to 6:00pm at CVMC South Lobby
As we usher in 2025, CVMC Art Gallery is pleased to welcome the works of Elisabeth Mazzilli. Mazzilli is a self-taught Vermont artist, using rug hooking on linen method to create colorful works of art. Her vibrant images seamlessly blend traditional techniques with modern subject matter. Mazzilli’s use of texture, line, color, and composition elevates her works from traditional craft to a more formal artistic canon. Elisabeth is a working artist with representation at the Front Gallery in Montpelier, VT.
Artist Statement: I am a self-taught rug hooker living in the Mad River Valley who stumbled upon my craft by fortunate circumstance and practicality. I had for years made woven and braided rugs for my home and was encouraged to try rug hooking by a pattern maker and hooker from the islands. I knew when I first dipped my tool into the linen that I was hooked.
There's a special type of explosive creativity when you not only design a pattern, but then choose colors of wools with which to design your rug. The vibrancy and texture of woolen fabrics is endless and I developed a chunky, rustic way of hooking that not only suits my personality, but also allows me to use a variety of woolen fabrics, creating a special texturing to my designs. Over the thousands of hours I have spent hooking, I have honed my technique and learned skills that allow me to fully express my art through my work.
Pieces in this exhibition were created over the last five years and are reflections of moments and beings in time and space. Each piece seeks to capture the essence and feeling of what is being depicted, using lines and colors to create movement and composition to bring a fullness to the subject. Every piece was self-imagined and hand drawn freestyle on linen before woolen fabrics were chosen for color and texture.
