At Central Vermont Medical Center we carry and make a variety of orthotics that can be helpful to individuals experiencing various types of back, feet, or knee issues.
At CVMC Rehabilitation Services, we carry and make a variety of orthotics that can be helpful to individuals experiencing back pain, bunions, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, flat feet (pes planus), over pronation, etc.
Please check with your insurance company to see if orthotics are a covered service.
What Are Orthotics?
An orthosis, by definition, is an external, custom-made medical device that is used to support, align, prevent or correct deformities of a body party, or to assist a physical weakness or improve function of moveable parts of the body. In other words, an orthotic that can be placed in your shoe, is intended to minimize abnormal motion (whether it is too little motion or too much motion) in your lower body.
Orthotics Evaluation
After a detailed examination of your posture, foot alignment and gait, it may be determined that you are a candidate for orthotics.
Types of Orthotics
Off-the-shelf orthotics are most appropriate for people that have mild impairments and need light support. These orthotics typically last 6-12 months before they need to be replaced.
Our custom-made orthotics are for more involved impairments and can last up to 10 years depending on the type of orthotic and the amount of wear over the years. Some custom orthotics can be fabricated in our clinic and are available 2 to 3 days after your visit. For others, we make plaster molds of your feet and send them away for fabrication. These orthotics take about 3 weeks to be completed and returned to our clinic.
Additional Treatment
In addition to orthotics, patients will be instructed in a home exercise program to complement the orthotics, as the orthotics alone typically will not resolve your symptoms.
