About Stuttering

Stuttering is a brain-based speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or last longer than normal, or in which there are blocks in speech. These problems cause a break in the flow of speech (called dysfluency).

Emerging research is demonstrating that these disfluencies are based on differences in the architecture of the parts of the brain responsible for coordinating and programming speech. Stuttering severity varies widely: in some people it is a barely perceptible impediment, and for others with severe symptoms the problem can effectively prevent most oral communication.
