Nutrition

At Central Vermont Medical Center we believe that quality cancer treatment includes careful attention to the nutritional status of our patients.

Quality cancer treatment includes careful attention to the nutritional status of individuals receiving cancer treatment (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy). These treatments can cause a variety of side effects, some of which include: the amount and quality of foods eaten, the absorption of nutrients from foods, the overall nutritional status, the sense of well-being and quality of life.

Early detection of nutritional problems is essential for successful outcomes. The Dietitian at the National Life Cancer Treatment Center will plan and coordinate the nutritional care of patients by focusing on the nutrition-related side effects during treatment. Working with the patient and their families, a nutritional strategy will be created in a effort to manage side effects and prevent future recurrences of cancer.

The Dietitian meets with each individual at the beginning of their treatment and is available throughout treatment to:

  • Assess their nutritional status
  • Review any food tolerances
  • Determine their nutrition requirements
  • Assist with modification of food textures when indicated
  • Assist with management of symptoms related to treatment
  • Develop strategies for maintaining energy, strength and weight throughout treatment and recovery
  • Plan nutritional support with tube feeding when alternate nutrition is necessary

Meeting the nutritional needs of individuals in active cancer treatment can be challenging. The Dietitian at the National Life Cancer Treatment Center will assist with the important goal of improving the quality of care and quality of life for all patients.

Services provided by the Dietitian at the National Life Cancer Treatment Center are offered free of charge.

(Note: We hope to expand these services to medical oncology patients at Mountainview Medical in the near future.)
