In 2015 we launched several University of Vermont Health Network initiatives, including collaboration in our Intensive Care Units and improvements in heart failure management, as well as local efforts such as increasing our minimum wage to $11 an hour, the addition of patient rooms, and more.
we believe in keeping kids healthy at school
For students like EmilyGrace Spaulding, CVMC's school based health center, a collaboration with the Barre City School District and CVMC’s Pediatric Primary Care practices, allows her to be evaluated without having to leave school. For busy working parents, single moms and those with transportation issues, the service is a godsend.
we believe everyone should have healthy food
Somewhere deep in the back of Chief Operating Officer Nancy Lothian’s mind is the image of her father growing up hungry. One of 13 kids, there were many days he spent without enough food. This memory is part of what fuels her passion to provide fresh food to the community through the Health Care Share (HCS) program, which she champions. The other reason is, simply, “It’s the right thing to do.”
we believe transportation should not be a barrier to health care
After construction worker Robert Ives shattered his heel, fractured his ankles, and ended up in a wheelchair, he found it virtually impossible to get around Barre. Outside of the normal bus route and without transportation, the only way for him to get to the medical services he needed was with the CVMC Barre Health Shuttle.
we believe everyone deserves a visit to the dentist
Dental Hygienist Sandy Joslin applies a numbing agent to her patient’s gums - pitted with abscesses, missing teeth and cavities. Like some of the people Sandy sees at the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic (PHWC) in Barre, there’s going to be more dental work involved than a routine cleaning and check-up. The case must be managed and referred to encompass a higher level of care. For people lacking money or health insurance, it is a process that would be nearly impossible without her.
we believe care begins at home
Jessy Jacobs of Barre wants to be able to see clearly again. But until she can get her diabetes under control, cataract surgery has to wait. In the meantime, she’s working to regulate her insulin routine as part of an innovative Diabetic Telemonitor Program, a collaboration between Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice (CVHHH), and the medical center.
we believe in the power of giving
Bene-Fit Shop Manager and Volunteer Roxie Jarvis has folded clothes and shared smiles with customers at the thrift store every Wednesday for the last 10 years. It’s hard to tell the impact of her work at first glance but sales from the Bene-Fit shop combined with the CVMC Auxiliary Gift Shop at the hospital, have helped raise more than a million dollars for the Auxiliary since 1968.

We are working for and with our community to provide better access to urgent care, to implement early intervention and treatment for substance abuse disorders, to raise awareness of concussion among high school athletes, and to limit our carbon footprint.
