Health Care Share
In collaboration with Vermont Youth Conservation Corps and Hunger Mountain Co-op, we support the Health Care Share (HCS), a farm-fresh food assistance program for Vermont families in need. Each week of the growing season, nearly 600 people receive a share of vegetables, herbs and pasture-raised poultry from the Farm at VYCC, along with along with nutrition education and healthy cooking classes.
Member-families are enrolled by their health care provider and pick up shares at their doctor’s office. Each share includes a newsletter with nutritional information, recipes, and facts on featured veggies. Here is one member’s experience:
I’ve never had vegetables taste like this and I really haven’t cooked with them that much. But now with what you’ve set up for my family – it’s changed our whole diet.
VYCC employs local youth to grow and pack the shares. Corps members earn minimum wage and a Health Care Share, as well as job skills, nutrition education, and personal finance training. Since 2012, the HCS has expanded to five hospitals, serving over 400 families statewide, and employing more than 50 Vermont youth in their communities each year. Last year at CVMC, 150 families received approximately 30,300 pounds of produce and 1,350 pounds of chicken.
- 111 youth and young adults received pay and for-credit opportunities on the Farm
- From the operation of spring, summer, and fall crews, 50 youth were employed by the Farm Program
- Over 732 people volunteered at the Farm and donated more than 3,073 hours to the HCS
