Sensory Integration Treatment Offered at CVMC Rehabilitation Services

February 2, 2010

Central Vermont Medical Center Rehabilitation Services, located at 1311 Barre-Montpelier Rd. now provides child specific sensory integration treatment.

Sensory Integration is a person’s ability to take in information from the environment or from your body, make “sense” of the information and act on it. Sensory processing involves registration and perception of incoming information as well as discrimination of the information that is necessary for skilled activities.

“For most children sensory processing is effective: sensory input is registered, the child orients to and interprets the information then organizes and executes a response. Modulation of the input regulates the level of nervous system arousal,” explained Lauren Briere MS, OTR/L. “Effective Sensory Processing allows a child to be successful in home, community and school settings. Maintaining attention for play, tolerating a variety of clothing, textures and temperatures, tolerating crowds and finishing assignments are accomplished with ease,” she noted.

Ineffective Sensory Processing may occur anywhere in the process of registration the input to execution. Poor modulation results in unbalanced responses i.e. over reactive or under reactive to the situation. Children with ineffective processing have difficulties in home, community and school. They may become distressed when someone brushes against them in a crowded area, be intolerant of certain clothing, refuse to play as expected when brought to a playground, or may attempt to attend to a teacher but have difficulty screening out irrelevant sensory stimuli. Often sensory processing difficulties underlie problems in behavior, coordination and the completion of routine tasks.

Sensory Integration treatment, typically facilitated by an occupational therapist, can assist the child and their family gain strategies for managing sensory challenges at home and in the community. CVMC Rehabilitation Services, located at 1311 Barre-Montpelier Rd, Berlin, VT 05602, offers child specific sensory integration treatment in a bright and friendly setting. Please contact Lauren Briere MS, OTR/L at 371-5929 with questions or our front office at 371-4242 to schedule an appointment. Physician referral required.
