CVMC achieves American Diabetes Association recognition

November 30, 2009

The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at Central Vermont Medical Center was recently awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association.  The program was originally recognized in July of 1999.  This recognition indicates a high level of quality in education provided by the CVMC Diabetes Self-Management Program staff.

“Diabetes education is an important program in providing quality health care for Vermonters,” said Judy Tarr, CVMC’s president and CEO.  According to the Vermont Department of Health’s report on The Health Status of Vermonters 2008 “An estimated 29,000 Vermonters have diagnosed diabetes - and about 90,000 ages 40 to 74 are at risk of developing diabetes.”

The (ADA) endorses the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. To support this goal, the ADA Education Recognition Program (ERP) assesses whether applicants meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self Management Education. The ADA ERP is one of three and the oldest Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) deemed certifying bodies for Diabetes Self Management Training.

CVMC’s out-patient health education department has recently moved out of the main hospital building to building D on the same campus.  The team of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) includes Connie Lanphear, RN, Ilene Siegel, RD and Sylvia Gaboriault, RD.
